Bukhara is more than just madrassas, minarets, and centuries of Silk Road history, it’s also a fantastic place to enjoy hearty Uzbek cuisine and modern dining experiences. Whether you’re craving a traditional cooked the old-fashioned way or a stylish spot for dinner with a view, Bukhara has something for you. Here are my pick of the best restaurants in Bukhara.
1. Zaytoon Restaurant
Zaytoon is my absolute favorite restaurant in Bukhara. I dined here three times during my four days in the city, which shows how much I love this place. It’s not a traditional Uzbek restaurant, but a fantastic mix of Lebanese and Mediterranean dishes that are out of this world.
Located just a 10-minute drive southeast from the historic Lyabi Khause Square, a quick Yandex ride will get you to Zaytoon for less than $1 USD (20,000 som). The restaurant is modern and chic, perfectly on-trend for Instagram, yet still warm and welcoming, with subtle Middle Eastern and Mediterranean touches. Lush greenery are placed throughout the restaurant, which compliments the use of leather and wood throughout the space. You can choose to dine indoors, relax on the terrace, or enjoy a drink at the bar.
The service is excellent, with young, attentive staff who speak English and make you feel right at home. But the real star is the food, which is consistently delicious and memorable, making Zaytoon a must-visit spot in Bukhara for both the cuisine and the vibe.
My all time favorite is their Kunafeh, a traditional Arab dessert. The dish is served piping hot, which elevates the dish even further. You can taste the freshness, the layers of kadayif (spun pastry dough), cheese, and syrup, all of this is topped with generous amount of crushed nuts. You don’t have have a sweet tooth to love this dish, it’s for everyone!
2. Old Bukhara
Just steps from Bukhara’s landmark Lyabi Khause Square, Old Bukhara Restaurant is a long-time favorite among both locals and travelers. Its prime location makes it the perfect spot to soak up the charm of the old city while enjoying traditional Uzbek food.
Grab a seat on the upper deck terrace for sweeping sunset views, and pair the scenery with Bukhara classics like lamb shashlik, stir-fried beef, and Uzbek bread. If you’re looking for an authentic dining experience that captures the spirit of the city, Old Bukhara Restaurant is hard to beat.
3. Joy Chaikhana Lounge
Joy Chaikhana is one of Bukhara’s most popular restaurants, so making a reservation is highly recommended. I tried walking in at 7 pm on a weekday and couldn’t get a table, so I had to book for the following night instead.
The restaurant has excellent reviews on both Google and TripAdvisor, and it’s easy to see why. The interior is beautifully lit, creating a warm, almost magical atmosphere. In the evenings, live classical music on the upper floors adds an elegant touch to the dining experience.
Step inside and you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to another world. The thoughtful design and ambiance make Joy Chaikhana stand out from other restaurants in the city.
Be sure to try the local Uzbek dishes and pair them with a cold local beer. For first-timers, I recommend lagman, a Central Asian noodle soup/stir-noodle dish with tender beef, chewy flat noodles, and a rich tomato-vegetable sauce brightened by fresh dill. You won’t be disappointed.
4. Ayvan Restaurant
Tucked away in a quiet alley inside the beautiful Lyabi House Hotel, Ayvan is arguably the most stunning restaurant in Bukhara. Its outdoor terrace, shaded by carved wooden pillars and overlooking the historic Lyabi-Hauz pool, offers one of the most stunning view in the city.
I recommend making a reservation in advance and asking for a balcony table right on the edge for the best view. Honestly, the view alone makes the visit worthwhile.
The menu features a mix of traditional Uzbek dishes and international favorites. I recommend the beef tartar and braised beef ribs with mashed potatoes, paired with a local beer — the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring Bukhara.
